#3_Cathedral ablaze, 2022, 47’’ x 34’’
This third cathedral of my series was created thinking about Nantes cathedral, which was partly destroyed by fires, the last in 2019. I was there on July 21 when it started and it gave me a huge feeling of grief: a beautiful, glorious old haven was clearly disappearing in front of our eyes. I just made a transfer of my grief into the fabrics. The screen printed fabric I used had these bright red and yellow patterns that could represent a raging fire over the roofs and behind the stained glass.
Mostly self-dyed but for a few commercial fabrics, machine pieced and quilted.
It was selected for the virtual SAQA global exhibit “Expressionism”, curated by the Argentinian artist Teresita Leal. You can see the whole 35 textile paintings selected there.
#3_Cathédrale incendiée, 2022, 117 x 86 cm
Cette troisième cathédrale de ma série a été créée en pensant à la cathédrale de Nantes, qui a été partiellement détruite par des incendies, le dernier en 2019. J'étais là le 21 juillet quand ça a commencé et ça m'a donné un énorme sentiment de chagrin : un vieux havre magnifique et glorieux était clairement en train de disparaître sous nos yeux. J'ai simplement fait un transfert de mon chagrin dans les tissus. Le tissu sérigraphié que j'ai utilisé comportait ces motifs rouges et jaunes vifs qui pourraient représenter un feu qui fait rage au-dessus des toits et derrière les vitraux.
Cotons teints maison et quelques tissus du commerce, piécé et quilté machine.
